3 Manipur police personnel killed, 9 injured in ambushes

Newmai News Network Imphal | December 15   Three Manipur police personnel were killed and another nine injured in two separate attacks by suspected militants on Imphal-Moreh road in the newly created Tengnoupal district early on Thursday.   The first ambush occurred at Lokchao around 6:20 am, killing one police commando from Thoubal Police Station. The convoy of at least three police vehicles on (ROP) duty came under fire from the heavily armed men, according to a police report.   The cops were heading for Tengnoupal district headquarters by keeping vigil ahead of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh’s visit to the newly created district to inaugurate it when the fatal attack happened. Of the three personnel, two succumbed to their injuries at a hospital, according to official reports.   Two police sub-inspectors were among the injured. The unidentified armed men targeted the rear vehicle in the ambush. The cops fired in retaliation but the assailants fled the area. No casualties on the side of the suspected militants were reported.   According to initial reports, in the second ambush that took place at Bongyang around 8 am, one commando personnel was killed on the spot when another group of suspected militants opened heavy fire on them using sophisticated weapons. Bongyang is located about 20 km from Moreh.   Nine cops, some of them critically, were injured in the two fatal attacks. They are being treated at Shija Hospital, Imphal. Sources said conditions of four personnel are said to be serious. After sending in reinforcements to the spots, a massive hunt for the suspected militants was launched by a combined team of Assam Rifles and police. No arrests were made so far. There have been no claims of responsibility for the incidents believed to be coordinated attacks.   Chief Minister Ibobi condoled the killing and injuring of state police personnel in the two separate fatal incidents which he termed it as ‘anti-national and anti-people act of militants’.
