The premier inter club badminton championship of the state got underway here today at the Indoor Badminton Stadium, Mokokchung organized by the Mokokchung District Badminton Association (MDBA) with Prof. Pardeshi Lal, Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University as guest of honour. 


Ten teams are participating in the championship representing 7 badminton clubs from across Mokokchung district, featuring almost all of the top ranked badminton players of Nagaland state as well as some of the top shuttlers from Manipur and Assam.


Divided into two pools with five teams in each pool, the league round will witness a total of 140 matches being played between the five teams in both pools in seven different categories. The top two teams in each pool will proceed to the semi-finals of the 3-day competition. This is the fourth edition of the Mokokchung District Inter Club Badminton Championship and is regarded as the toughest draw of the championship so far, given the quality of players making their appearance in the current edition.


The two former champions, ShuttlersChuchuyimpang (2016 and 2018) and Native Shuttlers Mopungchuket (2017) as well as Soyim Smashers have top players from the state and from Assam and Manipur in their teamswhile Longsa Sporting Club is comprised exclusively of top Nagaland shuttlers. Badminton Association Khensa is a unique team in that all of their players are from Khensa village while L4 Badminton Impur and DC Team MDBA has a motley team of Mokokchung-based local players.


The inaugural function of the championship saw the introduction of current champions of Nagaland and Assam participating in the current competition by the MDBA president. Senior Vice President of Nagaland Badminton Association and Joint Secretary of Badminton Association of India, Dr. Watizulu also addressed the inaugural where he said the championship was a huge booster for the racquet sport in the district and state and expressed satisfaction at the face that almost all the top ranked players of the state were participating here. The inaugural function also saw the felicitation of 19 badminton players from Mokokchung who won various medals at the recent Nagaland inter-district championship in Zunheboto. Chief Referee of the championship, MolungAier administered the oath taking ceremony.


Earlier in the inaugural function, Prof. Pardeshi Lal, who himself was a badminton champion during his youth, congratulated the MDBA for conceiving the championship and successfully organizing it for the fourth time and for nurturing young talents. He also said that the championship should be seen as an opportunity for developing sporting spirit.
