ABUSING TECHNOLOGY

The ignominious act of Shashwat Kumar remains to be an eye opener for all of us. He has blatantly abused modern technology which was supposed to further the progress of humanity. Uploading obscene photos, on a highly popular social networking site Facebook, to fulfill his selfish demands shows that he is not only a psychopath but poses an immense danger to society as well. Facebook is a social networking service and website launched in February 2004, operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. As of January 2011, Facebook has more than 600 million active users. Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics. The name of the service stems from the colloquial given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the United States to help students get to know each other better. Facebook allows anyone who declares themselves to be at least 13 years old to become a registered user of the website.
There are many people like Shaswat Kumar who prowl on such sites to lure innocent kids and women to abuse them, it is therefore imperative that adults monitor and see what young children do on the internet, lest they fall prey to pedophiles and criminals. In this age of women empowerment and emancipation, supplemented with the rise of many young ingenious Naga women in all spheres, they too must take care and adhere to norms which are safe and steer clear of individuals who seem mentally unsound. Modernization does not necessarily mean westernization in all aspects, it should be remembered that it is only through education which is a direct corollary to a modern and vibrant society.
Applauding the Dimapur police for their swift action against the offender, we must keep in mind that this incident is not the first nor will be the last. Also, condemning the victim will not materialize or amount to anything. Whatever be the reason, women have always been on the receiving end. Facts, evidences or moral dearth may prove the victim too was on the wrong side, but justice cannot be served merely on factual grounds, after all the ultimate decision is based on what is right. Therefore, it must be made sure that the offender along with its accomplices does not elude justice in any manner and punitive action must be swiftly awarded so that such incidents do not repeat again in the future.
I am very much elated by the fact that, today the new breed of Naga youngsters are voicing their grievances and frustration on social networks and blogs which did not seem possible a few years ago. Both men and women alike, equally participate in forums by highlighting on many important issues facing the Naga society. I have been keenly observing the page “We the Nagas” on Facebook, which is one of the most active pages, with a current membership of more than 10,000 members and rising each day. This forum with its discerning administrator has always put forward crucial topics and issues tormenting the Naga society. As an active participant, I was amazed by at the brilliant suggestions, recommendations and audacious comments, by many of its members, on a plethora of issues pertaining to political, social and economic importance. It would be perspicacious if some of the political leaders, bureaucrats and civil society workers could take the time and go through some of the perspectives of what the young Nagas want and aspire for Nagaland today. The young Naga intelligentsia is still in the nascent stage of achieving political as well as social consciousness, but it will be through their potent voice which will culminate towards a progressive and vibrant Naga society in posterity.
