Achilla Imlong Erdican’s demise mourned

Dimapur, June 9 (MExN): The demise of Achilla Imlong Erdican was today mourned by different organizations. She passed away on June 7 in Dimapur at the age of 89.   DENSU: Dimapur Eastern Naga Students’ Union (DENSU) said Achilla was the first woman to matriculate and graduate from the Chang community. “She was an incredibly influential person, who served the Government of Nagaland in various capacities, a recipient of the Governor's award and a contributor of Naga artifacts to GON,” stated a condolence message from DENSU president, Stephen Chang. The union asserted that her demise has not only brought loss to the community, but the Nagas in general.   NSBSG: Nagaland State Bharat Scouts & Guides (NSBSG) in another condolence message informed that Achilla was the first State Commissioner (Guide) and one among the founding members of the Association in 1967 as Special Officer. “We acknowledge her contribution and pioneering seeds she laid for the Association,” read the message from Atuo Mezhur Sekhose, State Chief Commissioner and Chubanungla, State Secretary.   It further noted that Achilla was first introduced to Guiding in Sarawak, Borneo in Malaysia, where she taught for three years at Methodist Secondary School in Sibu and was a Guide Captain then. In 1965, she represented India at New York's World Fair and subsequently attended Guide Commissioners Training session in London.   “Today, as she departs for her heavenly abode the family of the Bharat Scouts & Guides, Nagaland has lost a great pioneer and has left a big vacuum in our Guiding Family. We will continue to embrace her good works and carry the torch she had passed to us,” NSBSG added.   Art & Culture dept: The Director and Staffs of the Department of Art and Culture, Kohima have also expressed sadness at Achilla’s death. “Late Achilla was instrumental in preserving and bringing back the priceless document and Naga artifacts maintained by Gordon P. Means and her own collection from USA in the year 2012 and donated it to the Department,” said a message from Additional Director Chubala Sangtam. “She will be fondly remembered for her generous contributions made towards the department.”   The above organizations offered condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
