In an incident suspected to be linked to the ongoing tussle for leadership within the NPF-led DAN coalition government, 2 vehicles were burned in Kohima on Sunday evening. The incident occurred around 7:30 pm at the High School junction area.

According to the Kohima police, a Maruti Omni van and a Maruti 800 were burned at 2 different locations around the High School junction area. The Maruti 800, partially charred, was found at the road leading to the Directorate of Industries & Commerce and the van was located near where the Kohima Old Age Home was previously located. There was no report of any injury, with the police stating that investigation was underway.

The spots where the arson occurred are not far from Hotel Vivor where dissident legislators of the NPF-led DAN coalition are housed, following their return from Kaziranga. Placards bearing incendiary message apparently targeted at the dissident camp were also found at the site, informed the police.

Meanwhile, the Angami Youth Organization (AYO) said it was exasperated at the “act of hooliganism and goondaism perpetrated by unknown miscreants inflicted on the peaceful capital city of Nagaland by way of burning a van and maruti in the vicinity of Vivor hotel.”

“Whoever perpetrated this act shall and must be booked and be awarded necessary action under appropriate section of law. We demand that proper investigation be instituted effective immediately,” the AYO demanded in a press note.

It further appealed to all political parties to “refrain from such diabolic and unworthy acts as basing on the posters set up there, it is evident that this incident is a fall out of the present political imbroglio.” It asked for “sanity to prevail in this mess and maintain public interest and welfare as the priority of humanity and its existence.”
