Assam flood situation deteriorates

GUWAHATI, July 5 (PTI): The overall flood situation in Assam deteriorated today with nearly 50,000 people reeling under the deluge in five districts of the state, a report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Wednesday.   According to the ASDMA, over 40,900 people are affected at present in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Barpeta, Dibrugarh and Karimganj districts.   Yesterday, nearly 26,000 people were affected by the flood in the three districts of the state and 36 villages were under water. Currently, 56 villages are under water and 2,729 hectares of crop areas have been damaged, the ASDMA said.   The ASDMA said authorities are running seven relief camps and distribution centres, where 21 people are taking shelter at the moment.   Currently, the Brahmaputra river at Nimatighat in Jorhat, Jia Bharali river at NT Road Crossing in Sonitpur and Puthimari at NH Road Crossing in Kamrup are flowing above the danger mark.
