DIMAPUR, JANUARY 12 (MExN): Two NSCN (IM) cadres were arrested on January 4. According to a press release from the Assam Rifles, the arrest was made near the City Tower (Clock Tower) in an operation conducted by personnel of the 37 Assam Rifles.
The release stated that the operation was launched after information was received of NSCN (IM) cadres extorting from truck operators on NH-29. “… The suspected cadres were intercepted by troops of 37 AR near City Tower, Dimapur.” Extortion slips, Rs. 53,700 in cash and mobile phones bearing messages of truck numbers along with a Maruti Alto (NL 01H 2566) were recovered, the release stated. The two arrested individuals were identified as ‘Sergeant Major’ Victor Ningshen and Kuhovi Achumi, who according to the release was a “civil wing cadre of the NSCN (IM).”
While stating that the arrests has highlighted the use of SMS for extortion activities, the release stated that it has dented “the extortion network of NSCN (IM) in the area” and further cautioned other groups/cadres from indulging in such activities.
