Assault incident in Chumukedima condemned

Dimapur, September 23 (MExN): The Tenyimi Youth Organization Dimapur (TYOD) has condemned the incident at Chumukedima, where a father and son were “mercilessly beaten” on September 21.

Hinting that the perpetrators were “illegal” Bangladeshi immigrants, the organization warned the “IBIs” residing in Nagaland, particularly in Dimapur district, “not to take advantage over the silent, soft spoken and the rich culture of Nagas hospitality as its weakness but acknowledge the generosity for accommodating them for peaceful co-existence till today.”

The statement from TYOD president, Thejangulie Angami and general secretary, Khrozote Kapfo maintained that the deportation of illegal migrants have also become difficult and weak “due to the lack of strong law and political will, as illegal migrants are used as a vote bank by different political parties by indirectly selling our own identity.” Therefore, “it is high time that Nagas take stringent measures against the illegal migrants who have become a real threat to the security of the state,” it asserted.

TYOD meanwhile warned that it will no more remain a silent spectator to “this great challenging issue”, and called upon all right thinking citizens to come forward and join hands in defending the rights of the Nagas.

Further, TYOD appealed to the landlords, politicians, government, leaders at grassroots level and all the Naga political groups irrespective of factions to initiate necessary steps in unison to eradicate the particular challenge.

Angami Youth organization (AYO) in a separate statement stated the incident has alarmed the bell we all seldom listen to. “The threat which we need not elaborate in the media is a reality. Our identity and survival itself is at stake,” it added. The organization wished speedy recovery to the grievously harmed victims. “Steps shall be once and for all initiated to rightfully address this matter.”

Meanwhile, Chakhroma Students' Union (CSU) stated it is “deeply enraged” at the manner in which the family was attacked, not sparing even a minor innocent boy. “That a bunch of thugs would imprudently retaliate when reproved for their anti-social activities by a conscientious elder is highly condemnable beyond tolerance,” asserted CSU president, Rokovi Kruse and general secretary, Kevisese Krose in a statement. “At a time when people are striving for peaceful and harmonious relations between communities (local or non-local), incidents such as this only reinvigorates Nagas' common war on illegal immigrants,” it added.

The Western Chakhesang Hoho condemning the incident stated it will keep a check on the non locals “who come here for survival, for work and earn but are now getting bold enough to even threaten and assault the natives of the state.” In a statement issued by its president, Vekhosayi Nyekha, the Hoho appealed to all the Nagas to look into the “burning issue with all seriousness before our land get into more troubled waters…If we don't come up with a tough stance and action plan on this issue now, we are very close to social upheavals in the few years to come.” The Hoho further questioned the Government of Nagaland what role it has played in checking and deporting the immigrants who entered illegally from Bangladesh. It urged the responsible law enforcement agency that all the culprits be booked and awarded befitting punishment.
