Assault on journalist FIR withdrawn after 'unconditional apology'

Dimapur, May 9 (MExN): Nagaland Page has withdrawn its complaint against a Nagaland Police Constable, who reportedly assaulted and racially profiled a reporter in Dimapur, on May 8.

The incident happened at the Dimapur Railway Station and the Constable was posted at the Government Railway Police Station.  The newspaper withdrew its FIR after an “unconditional apology” was tendered by the erring personnel.
A press release from the ADCP (Crime) &PRO, Dimapur Police, on May 8 also informed that “appropriate disciplinary action has been taken against the erring personnel.”

The Foundation for Media Professionals (FMP) meanwhile expressed concern over the “unprovoked assault” stating that “the introduction of a communal angle in the assault further aggravated the seriousness of the incident.”

It said that cases of xenophobia and racial profiling relating to the coronavirus pandemic have been reported from various locations but however expressed hope that “police forces in the country will take steps to sensitise their frontline staff against acting in ways that propagate such behaviours in these stressful times.”

“Journalists are also at the same frontline of democracy at all times even during the times of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the FMP stated.
