ASTD clarifies on Mithun controversy

DIMAPUR, MAY 25 (MExN): The Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD) today refuted allegations that a Mithun was presented to the union by C Apok Jamir, the NPF candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha bye-election.

The NDPP and BJP had recently alleged that the NPF candidate presented a Mithun to the ASTD “which was later distributed amongst the members of the union.” The two parties had stated that this was in violation of the model code of conduct and had asked the ECI to take cognizance.

Terming this as “absolutely false and far from the truth,” a press statement from the ASTD President, L Wati Jamir and General Secretary, K Mar Lemtur informed that a Mithun was given to the Executive Committee members of the ASTD, but by former Odisha Governor, Dr SC Jamir “as a token of regard to the ASTD, and above all for himself and his blessed wife.”

The ASTD said that Dr SC Jamir “who is regarded as one of the pioneering and prominent leaders from Ao tribe, is also one of the pioneering members of ASTD.”

“The magnitude of his contributions materially and advice are beyond explanation. Recently he returned home at Chumukedima, Dimapur, on retirement from the constitutional post of the Governor of Odisha with sound physical and mental health despite old age and physical injury sustained earlier which would otherwise not have survived without the miraculous power of the Divine,” the ASTD said. It was under such circumstances that the Mithun was presented to the ASTD Executive Committee members, the ASTD maintained.

It therefore claimed that the allegations of having received the animal from the NPF candidate and the meat being distributed amongst the members are “absolutely false.”
