ATMA Dimapur conduct State Farmers Training

Dimapur, March 22 (MExN): ATMA Dimapur organized State Farmers Training on March 20 at Niuland Town for farmers, women farmers and SHGs on the topics of ‘Integrated Farming System’ and ‘Mixed Farming System.’

Resource person from KVK-ICAR, Jharnapani, James Kikon, ACTO (Soil Science) elaborated with special reference to (Agri + Horti + Fishery + Livestock) and cited its advantages like improved profitability achieved mainly by way of reduced costs due to recycling of wastes of one enterprise as energy inputs for other systems. It forces the entrepreneur to know more things and hence improves the literacy level.

He cited benefits like that the livestock excreta act as excellent manure for fish ponds and crops. The pond dikes provide space for erection of animal house and hence no additional land is required. Pond silt may be used as fertilizer for fodder crops, which in turn is used to raise livestock and poultry or as fish feed.

A judicious mix of agricultural enterprises like dairy, poultry, piggery, fishery, sericulture etc. suited to the given agro-climatic conditions and socio-economic status of the farmers would bring prosperity in the farming, he added.

Kolom Rabi, ACTO, KVK-ICAR, Jharnapani mentioned about the advantages of mixed farming stating that It offers highest return on farm business, as the byproducts of farm are properly utilized. It provides work throughout year added with efficient utilization of land, labour, equipment and other resources. The crop by products such as straw, bus, fodder etc. is used for feeding of livestock and in return they provide milk. It helps in supplying all the food needs of the family members. If one source of income is lost he can maintain his family from other source of income. Mixed farming increases social status of the farmer.
