ATMA functionaries attend training on ‘Climate Resilient Agriculture’

Dimapur, October 13 (MExN): State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) organised a three days training on ‘Climate Resilient Agriculture: Approaches & Practices’ for ATMA functionaries at SAMETI, Medziphema from October 10 to 12.  

Welcoming the participants, Director SAMETI, Dr. I. Amenla Jamir stressed on the importance of creating awareness and finding means of tackling the challenges posed by climate change on agriculture and allied sectors in the present scenario. She therefore, urged the participants to partake in the training with utmost sincerity and participation.  

Resource persons for the training program were Dr. D. J. Rajkhowa, Joint Director, ICAR, Research Complex for NER; Dr. Lohit K. Baishya, Senior Scientist (Agronomy), ICAR, Research Complex for NER; Dr. Romen Sharma, Scientist (Agricultural Extension), ICAR, Research Complex for NER; Dr. Azeze Seyie, Scientist (Spices, Plantation, Medicinal & Aromatic plants), ICAR, Research Complex for NER; Dr. Rajesha G, Scientist (Plant Pathology), ICAR, Research Complex for NER; Dr. Aabon W. Yanthan, Scientist (Horticulture Vegetable Science), ICAR, Research Complex for NER ; Dr. Harendra Verma, Scientist (Plant Breeding & Genetics), ICAR, Research Complex for NER; Dr. Jyotish Barman, Scientist (Fisheries Resource Management), ICAR, Research Complex for NER ; Dr. Anamika Sharma, Programme Coordinator, KVK Dimapur Shri. James Kikon, Assistant Chief Technical Officer, KVK Dimapur; Dr. Ebibeni Ngully, Assistant Chief Technical Officer, KVK Dimapur; Shri. Bodevi Shuya, Lecturer I.E.T.C. & Team member NHBM.  

The training course covered topics on all Agri. and allied disciplines viz. Climate change and its impact on Agriculture-issues & Strategies, Water management in Agriculture-As a means of counteracting the climate related constrains, Conservation agriculture –Issues &practices in context to climate change, Integrated farming system-its relevance under changing climate scenario, Weather forecasting-its significance in agriculture under climate change situation, Climate resilient practices for scientific pig and poultry farming, Horticulture based farming system –its importance in the context of climate change, Integrated disease management options under climate change scenario, Soil Health Management-Its significance under climate change scenario, Management in livestock farming under climate change scenario, Post harvest management –its importance under climate change scenario, Protected cultivation –its significance under climate change scenario, Scientific pisiculture under climate change scenario, Crops & Cultivars in the context of climate change.  

The valedictory function was chaired by Tiajungla Longchar, DPD SAMETI, while feedback on the training was given by Akavi Holo, BTM Dimapur and Tekasangla Ozukum, BTM Mokokchung. In her valedictory address, Director SAMETI, Dr. I. Amenla expressed that farmers are facing the brunt of climate change and it is the duty of the functionaries to make farmers aware of it and its impact on them. She encouraged the trainees to emphasise on Climate Smart Agriculture where sustainable productivity, adaptation and mitigation are taken into consideration for increasing production, reduce short-term risk and reduce and/or remove greenhouse gas emission. She also asked the trainees to encourage participation of women farmers in decision making as they play a major role in farming. In conclusion, she highlighted that unless farmers participate or understand climate change, what they have learned will be of no use and hence, encouraged the trainees to give their best and carry the knowledge to farmers for their benefit.   The training program saw a good turnout of participants from all districts of the state and concluded with distribution of certificates and training handout to the trainees by Dr. Watimongla Jamir, Vice-Principal, IETC, while vote of thanks was pronounced by Dr. Ithika C. Swu, DPD SAMETI.
