Medziphema, April 26 (MExN): An awareness programme on plastic waste management was organised by ADC & Administrator Medziphema Town Council at Medziphema Town Hall on April 26. As per DIPR report, ADC Thsuvisie Phoji gave a brief short speech on awareness of plastic waste management.
Resource person, EAC Sentilong stated that plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic objects in the earth’s environment that affects humans and wildlife. Plastics were first produced since the 1940s and at present day, about 300 million tons of plastic is produced each year and only 10% of it is recycled and the rest polluting our environment. As such plastic takes 500-1000 years to be decomposed, he said.
He informed that about 8 million pieces of plastic entering the ocean causing death to millions of sea birds, various marine mammals and aquatic ecosystem. Further he added that an average human intake about 70,000 microplastics every year and as such some compounds found in plastic which effects the hormones and even effects the health.
Lastly, he called upon all to educate one another on plastic pollution. The programme concluded with distribution of biodegradable bag to each participant.
