Awareness programme on GST conducted in Kohima

KOHIMA, APRIL 30 (DIPR): An awareness programme on Goods and Services Tax (GST) was held with the Chief Secretary, Pankaj Kumar as the chief guest on April 29 at APO Hall, Kohima.  

Speaking at the programme, the chief guest said that the introduction of technological transaction in banking system would be efficient and helpful for shopkeepers and traders as well as in government sector for easy transfer of taxes and other government benefits. Adding that Goods and services tax was more favorable as Nagaland is mainly a consuming state, where production and export is very less.  

He stated that this system will increase the revenue and urged the participants to take the opportunities to participate in trainings and awareness programmes for the benefit of whole economy and for the betterment of the state. He also informed that July 1 is the tentative starting date by Central and State government for the implementation.  

Chief Commissioner for Customs and Service Tax, Shillong Zone, SK Panda said that the Goods and services Tax campaign is being held to create awareness to the people to give boost to foreign investment, seamless flow of input tax credit throughout supply chain, efficient neutralization of taxes to make export more competitive, increase economic activities and reduction in compliance costs and multiple records not required to be maintained for different taxes. He also requested the Commissioner of Taxes Nagaland to carry forward the message and to create awareness in colleges and universities so that the youngsters would aware of GST for brighter state.  

Commissioner of Taxes Nagaland, Asangba Chuba Ao, IAS while giving his PowerPoint presentation said that the benefits of Goods and Services Tax was to reduce in cascading of taxes, overall reduction in prices, self regulating tax system, consumption based tax, protection of domestic industry etc. He informed that the workshops with trade bodies, Bussiness association and tax practitioners would be completed the month of April to May 2017 in all the districts.  

The programme was jointly organised by the central Excise and Services tax and Excise Department, Dovernment of Nagaland. Vote of thanks was pronounced by Commissioner Central Excise Shillong, G. Panmei. Altogether 250 traders and shopkeepers attended the programme.
