Banana Fiber Extraction Unit installed at Mkg

Dimapur, February 19 (MExN): Pseduo Stems of banana after harvesting of fruits is often a problem for disposing which get accumulated in huge stock. Fruitful utilization of these stem which is otherwise wasted is therefore an important issue related to banana cultivation. With the advancement of new technologies a method is available for extraction of the banana fibers. Thus with the objective of transferring this new technology through training and demonstrations a “Banana Fiber Extraction Unit” was installed at KVK Mokokchung. It was officially inaugurated on February 17 by N. Tekatushi Ao, Joint Director, SARS and Project Director ATMA Mokokchung. This was informed in a press note issued by KVK Mokokchung Programme Coordinator, S. Sosang Jamir.
Tekatushi in his speech emphasized on the objectives of Vision 2020 ‘Food for All’. He mentioned that judicious adoption of new technologies like banana fiber extraction for generating more income should find a place with the farmers of the district. The Programme Coordinator and Renbomo Subject Matter Specialist (Horti) also spoke on the occasion.  The establishment of the Unit was partially sponsored by ATMA Mokokchung under REFL Programme. Representatives of State Agricultural Research Station Yisemyong, District Agriculture Office, District Horticulture Office Mokokchung and the Adhoc Town Committee Yisemyong also participated in the programme. Since this is a new technology in Mokokchung district, initially KVK will conduct an On Farm Trail (OFT) to assess the cost benefit ratio of the fiber extractor. After OFT findings, training programmes will be taken up to transfer the new technologies to target groups (SHGs, rural youths, banana growers, entrepreneurs etc). With the installation of this machine it is expected to generate more employment opportunities and uplift the farmer’s economy by converting the banana waste into wealth.
