Advisor for Higher Education & Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NHBM), Deo Nukhu, has underscored the need to undertake more awareness campaigns on protection and conservation of the environment vis-à-vis economic sustainability through bee keeping.

The NBHM Advisor said rampant destruction of forests, the natural habitats of flora and fauna, in Nagaland has led to diminishing the population of bees, which depend solely on vegetation to produce honey.

Addressing the World Honey Bee Day celebration organized by NHBM here at the Multi Utility Centre, 6th Mile, Nukhu said human beings and bees share a close relationship with each other since ancient times. He said bees form an integral part of the food and rural economic activities of human beings and the honey gifted by bees not only provide wholesome food to mankind but are used for medicinal and other purposes.

Nukhu said the future of mankind would be at stake if bees were to disappear from the earth due to destruction of the environment.

Urging the NBHM to encourage NGOs and educated unemployed youth to take up bee keeping, the NBHM advisor also reminded that income generated through bee keeping is much higher than many agricultural and allied activities.

A host of special invitees including general manager, NABARD, SK Dhumal; Joint Director, ICAR Nagaland Centre, Dr. Rajkhowa and HoD Entomology, SASRD, Dr. HK Singh, also addressed the celebration.

Secretary and team leader, NBHM, T Mhabemo Yanthan, who also chaired the programme in his remark, said NBHM has a roadmap to cover at least 50,000 or 0.5 percent of the state’s population to take up beekeeping as an alternative source of livelihood.

Earlier, NBHM team member, Nzanbemo, gave a power point presentation of beekeeping in Nagaland. Progressive bee keepers from Bade, Pherima, Xelhohe and Hokhezhe villages also attended the event.
