The Dimapur police had a surprise today for bikers riding with retrofitted exhausts. The police have started a drive to curb the use of annoying, earsplitting silencers, especially on motor-cycles.

While some bikers think it is cool to replace factory-fitted silencers with high decibel kinds, it is not so and illegal too. It is a punishable offence under the Motor Vehicles Act and additionally can be booked under the Indian Penal Code.

According to the OC of East Police Station, over 20 bikes with modified/replaced silencers were stopped at various locations in the city and the riders/owners told to remove them at the spot. “We called mechanics to remove the noisy silencers and the offenders told to buy new ones (as per manufacturer specification), which were refitted on the spot,” said the OC. The detached silencers were confiscated and the offenders booked under section 290 of the IPC.

The police will continue to be on the lookout for abnormally loud motor-cycles.
