Unity College on National Road Safety Week attempts to build a safer India
 

Dimapur, January 20 (MExN): Unity College, Dimapur observed the 31st National Road Safety Week 2020 to spread awareness among the students and the public regarding road safety, traffic rules and etiquettes under the theme “Bringing change through youth power” from January 11 to 17. 


Road safety is a major concern for drivers as well as pedestrians and, therefore the College observed the National Road Safety Week in an attempt to build a safer India, the college stated in a press release. 


Various activities were undertaken for the week to spread awareness on importance of road safety. On the first day, 15 NCC cadets organized a street play in the college campus. The play was based on the theme ‘Slow and steady wins the race.’ The cadets through their play encouraged the audience to follow traffic rules, to drive with caution and reminded them that many people have lost their lives due to reckless, rash driving and non-compliance of traffic rules and regulations.


NSS, Unity College conducted a Road Safety programme in which Zubenthung Ngullie SDO (C) Sardar District Administration, Dimapur led the students in the pledge for road safety.  Toshi Aier, ABSI Dimapur Traffic delivering a talk on ‘Road Safety’ appealed to all the students and volunteers to spread awareness among the people on safe driving. 


The Unity College ‘Good Samaritan Award 2020’ was awarded to the Dimapur Traffic Police in appreciation of the selfless service rendered to the people and the community as a whole and to Nika K Yepthomi, an NSS member of Unity College. 


In another event Rahgiri-Walkathon Rally was also initiated by NSS from the College campus till the Industrial Estate, Lingrijan. A total of 60 NSS volunteers and two Programme Officers (POs) participated in the event. The volunteers covered the stretch with banners and placards spreading the message to the people around. Many People responded positively by signing the Pledge on Road Safety.


The Eco Club, Unity College conducted ‘Tree of Remembrance’, an activity in which the students selected a prominent tree in the college campus and decorated it with hand road traffic signs, seat belts, helmets, and other relevant materials related to road safety and traffic, to catch the attention of the passerby in order to spread the message on road safety. 


IQAC Social Activities Committee, Unity College conducted the ‘Munna Bhai Campaign.’ A total of 33 students along with three Faculty members, under the supervision of Toshi Aier, ABSI, Traffic Dimapur and his team, led the campaign from the College Campus till City Tower Junction, Dimapur, The students, with the help of the traffic police team, checked and stopped the traffic rule violators and handed out roses by stressing upon the importance of traffic rules for road safety and advising the violators to follow the traffic rules. Around traffic rule violators were handed out the roses.  


Young Indians (Yuva), Unity College organized a ‘Helmet Awareness Rally’, the Rally was flagged off from the College Campus to various points of the city. Around 75 students including the teachers went out for the rally carrying placards with awareness messages about safe driving and prevention of head injuries.


A brainstorming event on the ‘Safe India Ideathon’ was also conducted in the week long observation on road safety in which the students presented their views on different problems related to road safety. A first responder training workshop was also conducted where the students were given the basics on what to do in case of road accidents.
