A businessman linked to the assassination of the Arunachal Pradesh MLA Tirong Aboh was arrested in Dimapur on August 20, The Arunachal Times has reported.

According to the report, the arrested individual, identified as Jaikisham Sharma, is a businessman based in Khonsa, Arunachal Pradesh and believed to be close to the NSCN (IM).  The NIA also reportedly recovered Rs 10 lakh in cash from the possession of Sharma, who it stated has business interest in districts like Tirap, Changlang and Longding and also in Assam’s Dibrugarh. The NIA suspects that he shared the travel plan of late Aboh to the group involved in the gruesome murder.

Aboh, his son and 9 others were assassinated in an ambush on 21 May this year near Khonsa just days before the election result was declared. He had defeated Phawang Lowang of the Bharatiya Janata Party when the results were out on 23 May.

Five members of the NSCN (IM) have been named as key suspects by the NIA, while, the NSCN (IM) strongly refuted allegation of linking them with the murder of late Aboh terming it as “conspiracy against them.”

Meanwhile, the Dimapur police confirmed Sharma’s arrest. The police informed that Sharma along with 3 others were arrested in an undisclosed location in Dimapur on August 20 in an extortion-related case. The police also confirmed the reported confiscation of Rs. 10 lakh from his possession. “An extortion case was registered at East Police Station and the four were handed over to judicial custody while investigation ensued,” the police said.

The NIA subsequently took custody of Sharma from the court, while the other three remained in judicial custody. The police declined to comment on the antecedents of the three and stated that the Dimapur police will officially issue a press release detailing the incident on August 23.
