The Core Committee of Nagaland Tribal Hohos and Civil Organisations (CCNTHCO) maintained the day’s bandh has “evoked emotional responses” despite differing voices. In a press release, the CCNTHO said that the emotional response perhaps reflects the general sentiment of the common people.

It claimed the bandh was a success in Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Peren, Meluri, Tseminyu, Dimapur and Chumukedima.

“In places where bandh was opposed, the people decided to support the Cry of Solution not Election in different manners,” the CCNTHCO said. Contrary to reports from the ground, it further claimed that Wokha town witnessed thin vehicular traffic, Kohima town was removed of its bustling atmosphere while in Phek, shops remained closed. It added that in Phek, “prayer and fasting programmes were held in different places for Naga Solution.”

“Perhaps in a first for the State, no volunteers were deployed anywhere to enforce the bandh with conscientious citizens voluntarily observing the bandh,” it added.

Stating the people’s response to the CCNTHO call has been clear, it said that the political parties may reflect on it.

“Any violation of the 29 January Declaration would be akin to betrayal. The CCNTHCO is hopeful that there will be no Judas in the Naga family. For those bent on filing nominations, it’s not only the political party which would be held responsible but even the tribe to which he or she belongs would be tainted by the act of these opportunistic individuals.”

It meanwhile informed that all the apex tribe hohos and the other civil society organisations to compulsorily attend a meeting at Hotel Japfü, Kohima on February 3 at 11:00 am to chart further course of action.

CCNTHCO co-convenor Joel Naga when asked to comment on the rather lukewarm response to the bandh call responded that it is not about whether the bandh was a success or not but about raising an issue. “We have managed to raise an issue. It’s more about whether Delhi has taken notice. We have made it clear to Delhi that the Nagas want solution and not election (at this juncture).”

He went on to add, “I am very confident Delhi has taken notice.”
