Chuchuyimlang observes 'Noble Deeds Day'

Honours ‘Nagaland’s Gandhi’ Padmashree Late Natwar Thakkar
Chuchuyimlang, October 9 (MExN): Community members of Chuchuyimlang gathered on the morning of October 9 to observe the first ever 'Noble Deeds Day.' The day commemorated the 87th birth anniversary of Padmashree Late Natwar Thakkar in recognition of his lifelong commitment to serve the community on Gandhian lines.
This decision to celebrate 'Noble Deeds Day' came on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, when the Chairman of the Village Council, Aosanen Pongen urged citizens of Chuchuyimlang to observe the day every year by carrying out noble acts to benefit the life of those less privileged, a press release informed. This according to the Council would be a fitting tribute to the selfless and dedicated service rendered by the veteran Gandhian, often fondly referred to as ‘Nagaland’s Gandhi’ or ‘Mahatma’s Apostle,’ it said.
“The celebration of Noble Deeds Day was a display of great solidarity with the Council’s decision as people from all walks of life paid rich tributes to their leader in a public function organised on the Nagaland Gandhi Ashram premises,” stated the press release issued by Nagaland Gandhi Ashram, Chuchuyimlang.
The function was followed by a blood donation camp which saw active voluntary participation by local youth. A free eye screening camp was also organized in association with Jorhat Lions Eye Hospital. Due to popular demand, the eye camp is being extended until the next day, the release said.
Late Thakkar, a Gujarati by birth, established the Nagaland Gandhi Ashram in Chuchuyimlang in 1955. He found love and settled down permanently in the town where he continued to actively engage in voluntary work and community service for over six decades till he breathed his last on October 7, 2018.
The gathering that was representative of different sections of Chuchuyimlang community, including the Church, the youth and women groups and village elders, solemnly “pledged to continue working collectively towards realising the unfulfilled dreams and visions of Late Thakkar.”
The occasion was also graced by the presence of representatives from ten other Village Councils and Town Committees that fall under Chuchuyimlang administrative circle. The Ashram continues to function under the guardianship of Thakkar’s wife, Lentina Ao Thakkar, also a Padmashree recipient, the release informed.
