Cold wave conditions persist in Uttar Pradesh

  LUCKNOW, January 10 (PTI): Dense fog and cold wave conditions continued to hit normal life in parts of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, prompting the state government to take measures to ensure the poor did not suffer because of the weather.   The local MeT office here said dense to very dense fog occurred at a few places in eastern Uttar Pradesh and in isolated places in the western part of the state.   Cold to severe cold day conditions prevailed at a few places in eastern and western parts of the state, and day temperatures fell appreciably in Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Moradabad divisions, it said.   The day temperature were markedly below normal in Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Lucknow, Bareilly and Moradabad divisions, just below normal in Kanpur and Varanasi divisions, and normal in the remaining divisions of the state, the MeT office said.   Night temperatures were also markedly below normal in Moradabad, Faizabad, Allahabad, Lucknow divisions and below normal in Kanpur, Bareilly and Meerut divisions, it added.   Muzaffarnagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 2.2 degrees Celsius.     The MeT office forecast said shallow to moderate fog was very likely to occur at isolated places and the weather would remain dry.     Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday held a high-level meeting to review the relief work carried out to extend help to the cold-hit people of the state, an official spokesperson said.     Officials were asked to carry out surprise inspections of various projects undertaken to help the people and warned against laxity or corruption, he said.     The district magistrates were directed to verify the progress of blanket distribution, bonfire arrangements and condition of night shelters on January 11 and 12, the official added.  

Bihar schools shut till Saturday due to cold

  Patna, (IANS) With intense cold conditions continuing across Bihar, academic activities in all public and private schools have been badly affected.   Patna District Magistrate Kumar Ravi has extended suspension of classes up to standard 8 in all schools till January 13.   Apart from Patna, district authorities in Purnea, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhojpur, Darbhanga and Bhagalpur, among others, have also suspended classes till January 13.   A met official said a major part of Bihar was in the grip of cold and the condition will continue till the next 48 hours.   "Most of north-west and north central parts of Bihar are facing a cold spell due to cold winds coming from the snow-laden Himalayan region. There is little chance of respite from cold conditions in the coming two days," the official said.   This year, Purnea recorded a minimum temperature of 1.2 degrees Celsius on last Monday, Gaya recorded 2.4 degrees last week and Patna recorded 4.7 degrees on Friday. Bhagalpur recorded 3 degrees Celsius on Monday.   Dense fog has disrupted air and rail services with several flights being delayed and long-distance trains running late.
