A Congress leader in Manipur called for a united struggle against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on Wednesday while expressing that the Centre will move for passing a new CAB in the upcoming Parliament session.
Kh Joykishan, a Congress MLA from Thangmeiband assembly constituency, said that time has come for all political parties irrespective of opposition and ruling parties and civil society organisations to voice against the bill together. "Otherwise it would be too late", he said while addressing a press conference at his residence.
He then suggested that voicing against the CAB once it is passed will have no impact. "So, there is the need for voicing against the bill right from now," he asserted.
He then alleged that the government of Manipur is not taking the issue of CAB seriously. "If CAB is not prevented from being passed by the Parliament, the future of the indigenous people of the state will be at stake", he added.
Regarding inclusion of "non-locals" in the voters list of the state, the Congress MLA urged the state government to investigate into the matter and award befitting punishment to those responsible persons. He further urged MLAs of the 60 assembly constituencies of the state and other stakeholders to take responsible in finding out "non-locals" in the voters list in their respective constituencies.
He then appealed the state government to hand over the responsibility of deleting the names of "non-locals" from the voter list in every Assembly constituency of the state.
During the press conference, the Congress MLA criticised the BJP-led government of Manipur for "not taking seriously" the controversial death of the 12-year-old girl student N Babysana in her hostel dormitory.
He questioned the "motive" behind the government not handing over the case to CBI till date despite strong pressure from almost all sections of the society, particularly from the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the suspicious death of the girl.
