CSU union assembly approves scholarship program

Kohima: In a welcome move to encourage the students, the Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) during its recent union assembly at Pfutsero, has approved the institution of CSU scholarship programme.

CSU president Seve Vadeo said that this scholarship programme will be launched officially during the 68th CSU General Session to be held at Sakraba and will commence from the 2015 academic session.

Stating that the Chakhesang people, especially in rural areas, still struggle in the field of education, the Union said the CSU Scholarship aims to identify/select hard working students from the rural areas with scholastic potential and assist them in acquiring books, uniforms and paying of tuition fees in well reputed educational institutions in Nagaland.

Initially the scholarship will be targeted for classes 8 through 10 in order to prepare them for the matriculate examination, the CSU official said. However, the scope of this scholarship can be expanded to Higher Secondary, College and also competitive examination tuitions in future, depending on the funds and success of the project in the years to come.

The scholarship may be availed by any bona fide members of the Chakhesang Community while primarily focusing on rural areas.

The candidate has to have secured a minimum of 70 % aggregate in grade V, VI and VII and the candidate must prove their genuineness of the need for financial assistance.

The candidate shall maintain a minimum aggregate of 75% to continue availing the scholarship, adding that the scholarship can be revoked if the candidate’s behavior is found to be unsatisfactory to the school authorities.

In the event of fraudulent representation of facts (documents and/or financial status) a fine of Rs. 3000 will be levied from the respective Unit/Village and be brought to the attention of the Union Assembly and its members shall be barred from applying for scholarship for 2(two) years. Members of any Unit/Village shall be barred from applying for CSU scholarship for 5 (years) if the Unit/Village failed to comply to the imposed fine.

Scholarship will be cancelled/withheld on the failure to submit a copy of the students’ annual progress report.

Referring to scholarship fund, the CSU stated that though not mandatory, CSU Units are encouraged to contribute towards the scholarship.

Necessary funds for the Scholarship are to be raised by the Scholarship Committee. The scholarship will cover only admission fees, books, uniforms and tuition fees of the selected candidates. The tuition fees will be paid directly to the school to which the candidate is enrolled.

A separate bank account shall be maintained exclusively for the scholarship.

Selection of Candidates: The Scholarship Committee shall set the dates for submission of applications. Applications received shall be scrutinized and shortlisted to a minimum of 10 candidates by the Scholarship Committee.

Further, the Union said the scholarship will only be applicable for schools in Nagaland selected by the Scholarship Committee.
