CVO Zunheboto receive pair of ‘Sumi-Ne’

Zunheboto, November 9 (MExN): The Deputy Commissioner, Zunheboto Tridebish Roy, IAS handed over a pair of ‘Sumi-Ne’ (long hair goat) to the CVO, Zunheboto on November 8 in the presence of Namang Sepong Chang and other officials of the department.  

A press release received here stated that the Deputy Commissioner, in his brief speech, expressed happiness to the department of AH & VS for accepting his humble gift. He said that this gesture was not done for the sake of advertisement but to encourage and let the department take care, preserve and propagate this highly valued animal so that it does not get extinct.  

Chief Veterinary Officer, Zunheboto, Dr. Toshi Aier said that this act of generous contribution made by the DC will go down the history in the development of “Sumi-Ne” preservation.  

‘Sumi-Ne’ Goat of Nagaland

According to the ICAR National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) ‘Sumi-Ne’ Goat of Nagaland also known as “Nagaland long hair goat” is reared by Sumi tribes in traditional open range system with almost zero input. Estimated population is about 4,500. It is a medium sized goat reared mainly for its silky fibre. Coat colour is white with black patches on head, neck and legs. Head is straight. Ears are horizontal. Horns are pointed, small sized and curved backwards. Beard is present. Long silky fibres obtained from these goats are used by local people for making traditional items with socio-cultural significance.
