DC Mon cautions village councils

Mon, March 12 (DIPR): The Deputy Commissioner of Mon, K. Thavaseelan (IAS) has cautioned that in the aftermath of the elections, in case any dispute/fight arises causing harm to human lives or damage to public/private property, “the concerned village council shall be held squarely responsible and liable to be fined a minimum of Rs. 50,000 in addition to dissolution of the village council.”

Referring to reports of certain village councils passing diktats involving expulsion of some GBs/residents from the village for voting for or against a certain party/candidate, the DC further warned, “If found to be true, the Village Council will face immediate disciplinary action including heavy fine and dissolution.”

He reminded the village councils that according to Section 15(1) of the Village Councils Acts, 1978, village councils shall be auxiliary to the District Administration and have powers to deal with maintenance of law and order and also to enforce orders passed by the competent authority on the village as a whole.
