‘Deport foreigners before CAB is passed,’ demands ZPM

Aizawl, February 11 (NNN): Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) general secretary, Lalmuanpuia Punte on Monday launched a scathing attack on the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) headed by Zoramthanga over the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and demanded the state government to deport illegal immigrants or foreigners, who crossed the Mizoram border from neighbouring Bangladesh, from Mizoram.

Addressing a party meeting at the ZPM officer here, Punte said, “A time has come for Mizoram to launch massive deportation drive against illegal immigrants especially the Chakma foreigners, who have been illegally residing in the state for decades, before the Centre passes the Citizenship Amendment Bill.”

He urged the state government to deport Chakma foreigners at the earliest possible before the Centre passes the Bill.

Expressing concern about the rapid increase in “illegal Chakma immigrants”, Punte said the state government should list “deportation of Chakama foreigners” from the state among its top priorities. He also said that the Centre is firm on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and is likely to table the bill in Rajya Sabha this week.

Lashing out at Chief Minister Zoramthanga, Punte accused him of “power hungry” and said the latter did not have concern about the impact of Citizenship Amendment Bill at a time when civil society organizations and student bodies are launching massive protest against the proposed legislation.

The ZPM leader also asked the ruling MNF to sever ties with the BJP led NDA government at the Centre.

He alleged that the MNF had committed a big insult to the people of Mizoram by maintaining “ties” with the BJP, a national party, which is keen on destroying the Mizo people and their religion.
