‘Development for Naga people’ JD (U)’s poll plank for Nagaland

  • Some sitting legislators seeking Party’s ticket

• Alliance with DAN under ‘serious review’

The Janata Dal (United) will contest the upcoming election to 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) with the theme “Development for Naga people.”  

This was decided at a consultative meeting of JD (U) Nagaland held here today.   Addressing press conference here, JD (U) Secretary General KC Tyagi, ex-MP, said the party will fight the polls in Nagaland under the leadership of NSN Lotha, Convener JD (U) Nagaland.  

He, however, did not elaborate on how many seats it will contest since the polls date were yet to be announced by Election Commission of India (ECI).  

The present tenure of 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly ends on March 13, 2018.  

Elaborating on the theme and issues they would be taking up during the elections, the Secretary General said, “Although, sufficient fund has been granted by the central government to the successive governments, yet, the progress and developments on the ground is very dismal.”  

In this regard, he vowed that JD (U) shall endeavor to fulfill its objective by bringing down the corruption to its lowest ebb.  

“If voted to power, the JD (U) is determined to utilize the fund judiciously for the all round development of Nagaland,” Tyagi added.   He also disclosed that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was very keen and looking forward to campaign during elections for the party and candidates in Nagaland.  

Nagaland JD (U) Convenor NSN Lotha revealed that some of the sitting legislators have contacted the party seeking ticket, but refused to divulge the names.  

Lotha also said that the JD (U) will have a serious review on whether to continue alliance in Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) which compromises of NPF, BJP, NCP and JD (U).  

Consultations processes are currently in progress within the party, yet, a final decision is awaited, he informed. He disclosed that YM Humtsoe, a retired bureaucrat, who served as OSD to former Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has officially joined the party and would contest the upcoming elections.  

Meanwhile the Nagaland State Unit, JD(U) will stage a “Dharna” at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi to highlight the burning issues of Nagaland in particular and the North East in general during the last week of January.
