Disaster preparedness prog held at Chiechama

Kohima, October 18 (MExN): A community programme on disaster preparedness was organised at Chiechama village on October 17 and 18 at the Village Panchayat Hall.  

Organised by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) in collaboration with Chiechama Village Youth Organisation (CVYO), the training covered various topics – Introduction to Disaster and Disaster Management, Role and Characteristics of Community First Responder, Knotting, Splinting, Bandaging, Emergency Methods of Rescue etc.  

Johnny Ruangmei, OSD, NSDMA in a short address said that the idea of disaster management and the methods of responses were neither taught to our forefathers nor are they aged traditions that is practiced today, “but we are learning it today as time has changed and it has become a necessity to cope and learn it.” Disaster, he stated, is inevitable and one can only prepare on preparedness and responses. He requested the Chiechama community to form a dedicated disaster response team and perform disaster response activities.  

Kekhriezhavi Lea, Geologist, NSDMA explained the causes of an earthquake and its effects. Pointing out that Nagaland state is placed under seismic zone V, he said disasters are bound to happen at any given time so we ought to be prepared.  

Meanwhile, Kekhriezhalie Metha, president, CVYO thanked the department for conducting the training and said the training was intended to educate and empower the youths so they will respond to any disasters independently. He was confident that the youths will practice their learning and also impart the same to others back home. Short speeches were also delivered by Pukoulie Chadi, village Head GB and Nitso Sogotsu, Chairman, Chiechama Village Council.  

Victor Yhome, DPA Kohima gave a lecture on the topic of Art of Communication, Consent and Confidentiality. The two-day training, which was attended by 80 youths, featured many practical sessions demonstrated by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Kohima.
