ECI team in Manipur to review poll preparedness

Newmai News Network Imphal | September 20   An Election Commission of India (ECI) team led by Chief Election Commissioner AK Joti today arrived in Imphal to assess the preparedness of the Manipur assembly which is due to go to polls in a few months time.   The team will meet state government officials and police during their two-day visit to the state. There team will also be interacting with leaders of political parties during their stay.   Meanwhile, sources said the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) is set to start poll campaign across the state from next week. In the run up to polls, defection has become a flavour of Manipur poll season. In the hope to improve their political fortunes, all the four Trinamool Congress (TC) MLAs of the state unit defected to Congress a few days ago. But more from the ruling Congress party and others are also joining the state BJP. Veteran Congress leader Yumkham Irabot Singh, representing Wangkhei constituency, resigned as MLA and also quit the party to join the state BJP recently. Protesting against entry of former TC legislator Konthoujam Sarat Singh into the Congress fold, all executive members of Konthoujam Block Congress Committee resigned from the party yesterday.   Meanwhile, former Congress MLA Laishram Radhakishore of Oinam constituency along with former candidates of last state assembly polls Dr Sapam Ranjan of Konthoujam constituency and H Dingo of Sekmai constituency joined the BJP Manipur Pradesh. Their joining was formally announced by state BJP President Kshetrimayum Bhabananda Singh today.   The state BJP chief slammed the Ibobi Singh headed Congress government dubbing it a totally failed one. He said, “BJP-ruled states are improving day by day in all fronts because they have good governance.”   Bhabananda hoped his party would register a thumping win in the ensuing polls. In the 60-member assembly, the BJP currently has two members. Chief Minister Ibobi is completing his third term.   The BJP has accused the Congress government of indulging in rampant corruption and misusing funds meant for development of the state in the last 15 years.
