‘Effectively implement Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016’

On World Disability Day, which was commemorated today, the Nagaland State Government was asked to ensure that Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 is implemented effectively in the state.  

Speaking at the World Disability Day 2017 observation under the theme, ‘Transformation towards Sustainable and Resilient Society for all,’ at Rengma Baptist Church Dimapur, Director, Prodigal’s Home Dimapur, K Ela called for the Government of Nagaland to effectively implement the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 with a strong political zeal. She also called for the support and cooperation of all concerned to let the government do what they need to do.  

The programme was organized by Exodus Disabled People Organization Federation and sponsored by the Dimapur Rengma Baptist Church, Khermahal.  

Dr Imli Ozukum, PMR, Dimapur District Hospital meanwhile pointed out that there was only one District Disability Rehabilitation Centre in Dimapur for the entire state and highlighted on the plight of persons with disabilities. This is being compounded by shortage of manpower, which compromises effective delivery of service, he added.  

He also spoke about the various treatments and facilities available at the Centre for persons with disabilities.   Speaking as the chief guest, Parliamentary Secretary for Higher Education, Thomas Ngullie identified himself as a “big friend” of persons with disabilities and added that the Centre was sending huge funds to the Social Welfare Department but full benefits were not reaching the targeted group of people.  

Thomas, who is also a Member, General Council for People with Multiple Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India informed that officials of the General Council would be arriving Dimapur on December 28 to discuss issues concerning people with disabilities. He invited persons with disabilities to meet the officials on the day. Thomas also informed that he was working towards feasibility of Direct Benefit Transfer System for persons with disabilities.  

The day was marked with specials numbers and dances performed by persons with disabilities. Rengma Baptist Church Khermahal meanwhile presented gifts to the persons with disabilities.
