Empowering municipal councils

Kohima, May 31 (MExN): The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) in collaboration with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) organized training on disaster management on May 27 at the KMC conference hall.     Secretary NSDMA, Khrienuo Metha said that Disaster Management Committees will be notified soon to empower municipal councils for effective response to disaster and to take up mitigation activities.    

Khrolou Koza, State Training & Capacity Building Officer, NSDMA presented a PPT on the need for community participation in disaster risk reduction. Johnny Ruangmei, OSD, NSDMA oriented the ward members on ward level disaster preparedness planning.    

Intensive group work and discussions were undertaken on ward level disaster preparedness planning. As an outcome of the one day workshop on community/municipal disaster preparedness planning, the Kohima Municipal Committee will be undertaking ward level disaster preparedness planning.  

The NSDMA also committed to extend ‘hand-hold’ support to KMC in the initiative of municipal ward level planning and other necessary trainings.    

Later, personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) drawn from the CD&HG gave demonstrations on how to conduct search & rescue, basic first aid etc. The training was attended by representatives from all the 19 wards of Kohima Municipal Council, informed a release from Secretary NSDMA.
