Fallout from Noklak district creation

• RSZ and RSU intensify demand for Tseminyu district

• Chang orgs oppose inclusion of Chingmei in Noklak

DIMAPUR/KOHIMA, DECEMBER 27 (MExN): The Government of Nagaland’s recent move to upgrade Noklak into the status of a district has led to certain sections expressing concern at the details of the move and some stepping up demands for districts of their own.

The Rengma Selo Zi (RSZ) and Rengma Students Union (RSU) for instance have intensified demands for a district of their own.

The two organizations have begun an indefinite peaceful Dharna at the ADC office Tseminyu from December 26 in support of the demand for Tseminyu district.

The RSZ and RSU informed that their dharna would continue till the demand is met.

Earlier today, the gathering was addressed by the President of the Rengma Hoho and other Rengma leaders.

It was informed that the dharna would continue till New Year, where all the Rengma villages and ranges will be participating day wise at the ADC office complex Tseminyu. The RSZ and RSU stated that Rengmas are one among other Nagas since statehood and were signatories of the historic Simon Commission of 1929. “Therefore suppressing Rengmas is a denial of their contribution.”

Meanwhile, several Chang organizations have registered their opposition to the inclusion Chingmei range, consisting of six villages viz Chingmei, New Chingmei, Chendang Saddle, Waoshu, Yimpang and Taknyu, under the newly created Noklak district. This, the organizations lamented was done “despite several appeals and representations.”

In a representation to the Nagaland State Chief Minister, Chang organizations comprising of Chang Khulei Setshang (CKS), Confederation of Chang Students Union (CCSU), Tuensang Village Citizen Union (TVCU) and CTS called upon the Government of Nagaland to respect the “tribal sentiments” and take into consideration the administrative convenience of governing the Chingmei range from Tuensang district.

The organizations, therefore, demanded the issuance of a government notification placing the mentioned villages under Tuensang district on or before January 5, 2018. They further cautioned that the government would be held responsible in case of failure to listen to their demands within the stipulated time.

‘A dawn for new opportunities’

The Khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam (KMH) and the Khiamniungan Tribal Council have meanwhile expressed their gratitude at the recent creation of Noklak district.

The KTC and the Noklak District Demand Committee (NDDC) in a joint statement said that the creation of Noklak district was a “long felt need of the citizens of Noklak Sub-Division” and expressed gratitude to the government and legislators for “understanding the genuine needs of Khiamniungan people and reaching out in time.”

“This noble gesture will usher in a new era of hope, peace and development which is very much essential for the upliftment and development of the most backward, underprivileged and remotely located community like Khiamniungan,” it said.

The KMH further acknowledged the efforts of the KTC and the Noklak District Demand Committee, along with village authorities under Noklak jurisdiction, officers and individuals. It expressed hope that the creation of this new district would “witness a new dawn in bringing positive changes and opportunities for the people of Khiamniungan.”
