Fencing work along Indo Bangladesh on Mizoram side expected to resume shortly

Newmai News Network Aizawl | July 24   A month after the Central government had put a halt on fencing work along Indo- Bangladesh border on Mizoram side, the normal work is expected to resume shortly, sources said.   Earlier in June, Border Management under Ministry of Home Affairs had asked all contractors to stop the ongoing fencing work along India-Bangladesh border in western part of Mizoram based on the recommendation of Madhukar Gupta Committee which inspected the fencing work in border area in early February this year. The Union Home Ministry had also asked to stop fencing work of the 'unfenced' border and all border flood lighting.   The fencing work along the Indo-Bangladesh border was started in 2005, and it is scheduled to be completed by March, 2019. The fencing work could not be expedited due to several reasons.   The fencing of Indo-Bangladesh border is being monitored by Engineering Projects India Limited (EPIL) and National Projects Construction Corporation Limited (NPCC).   Mizoram shares 318 km unfenced border with Bangladesh. Of the 233 km long border to be fenced, 150 km is under the supervision of NPCC, while 83 km is under EPIL.   Officials of EPIL said that 90 per cent of fencing work has been completed and the already fenced border was handed over to Border Security Force. NPCC has also completed 50 per cent of the fencing work, sources said.
