Filmmakers in Manipur urged to make socially relevant cinemas

Newmai News Network Imphal | April 21   Filmmaking in Manipur is fast flourishing since the past few decades. Noted Manipuri filmmaker Aribam Shyam Sharma said the 'Manipuri cinema' will continue to grow in the years to come.   Meanwhile, the State Government of Manipur has also urged the filmmakers in Manipur to make more films on issues related to socio-economic problems of the State.   These views were reflected during the ‘Cata Cine Awards 2017 & Felicitation’ function held at the Auditorium of Manipur State Film Development Society at Konung Mamang in Imphal today.   During the glittering event, SN Chand Lifetime Achievement Award for Extraordinary Contribution to Manipuri Cinema was given to producer/director Thoudam Dorendro; Basantakumar Wangkhem Lifetime Achievement Award for Artistic Excellence was given to Chongtham Kamala Devi; and L Daojee Sharma Lifetime Achievement Award for Technical Excellence to Laimayum Surjakanta Sharma.   Noted filmmakers and personalities including Haobam Paban, O. Doren, Dr. Meena Longjam, Bobo Khuraijam, Renuka Soraisam and Wanglen Khundongbam were also felicitated during the event.   Deputy Chief Minister, Yumnam Joykumar Singh while gracing the programme appealed the filmmakers in the State to reflect socio-economic and other impressive issues in Manipuri Cinema.   Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Chief Minister said that issues relating to socio-economic problems in the state should be reflected in Manipuri Cinema so that people will know of the reality and ways to address the problems can be made. He said, besides making entertainment films based on commercial end, 'impressive films' that can influence the people can also be produced. "It will give a strong message to our society," he added.   Describing the role of films in bringing a change and influence to society, the Deputy Chief Minister said, films based on present day scenario will let the people know what exactly is happening in the society. "It will help us to think again and the means to solve the problems can be sorted out," he added.   He then announced to institute an award named ‘Karam Manmohan Singh Memorial Life-time Achievement Award in Maniupuri Cinema’ from this year.   Commissioner, Art & Culture, H. Deleep Singh, Secretary, Manipur State Film Development Society Dr. R.K. Sushila and President, Cine Artistes & Technicians’ Association L. Banka Sharma were also present at the function.
