Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee died here on Monday at a private clinic following a cardiac arrest and prolonged illness, nursing home sources said, the IANS news agency reported. He was 89.
“He died at 8.15 a.m.,” the report said quoting Bellevue Clinic CEO Pradip Tondon.
Chatterjee was critical following the heart attack he suffered on Sunday, it said.
He was also suffering from a kidney-related ailment and was admitted to the clinic in a critical condition on August 7.
According to IANS, Chatterjee was earlier admitted to the nursing home on June 25 after suffering a haemorrhagic stroke.
He underwent treatment for 40 days and was discharged just for three days after his health showed signs of improvement.
However, he was re-admitted after his condition deteriorated last Tuesday.
Chatterjee, regarded as an outstanding parliamentarian, served as the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2004 to 2009.
