Frisking exercise intensifies along Manipur borders

Newmai News Network Imphal | September 17   As apprehension of Rohingya people entering Manipur rises, the State government has been taking up all possible measures to address the issue. Manipur police personnel, Assam Rifles and other security agencies are carrying out intense vigil along Manipur-Myanmar border areas, and also along Jiribam areas bordering Silchar in Assam. These security forces are carrying out massive drives identifying people by checking their identity cards and other related documents, according to reports.   Ever since the Rohingya issue cropped up in neighbouring Myanmar, security forces have been exercising extra measures of frisking people in all the entry points in Moreh area of Tengnoupal district bordering Myanmar.   Responding to a query regarding possible infiltration of Rohingya refugees on the sideline of a programme recently, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had stated that the State Government had put security forces on alert at border areas especially at Moreh, Jiribam and Behiang to check illegal entry of fleeing Rohingyas into Manipur.   Assam Rifles, State security forces and other security agencies have been keeping vigil at the ‘unfenced’ areas of Indo-Myanmar border, the Chief Minister had stated. Arrested refugees, if any, would be handed over to the Central Government authority for deportation, N Biren had said.   Meanwhile, a newspaper based in Imphal reported that checking for ‘illegal immigrants’ in Jiribam areas bordering Silchar in Assam has been intensified by the Manipur police. The Sangai Express daily newspaper reported today that police personnel have been carrying out this exercise in the past one week. In this exercise, the police personnel went to villages located in Manipur-Assam border and asked the villagers to produce Aadhaar cards and other related documents as part of verification work, the newspaper reported.   Also expressing its concern over the issue, Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) appealed to the State Government to strictly check the entry of Rohingyas into the State. In a statement, JCILPS reminded that it has been demanding to implement Inner Line Permit System in the State for the last many years to control the influx of non-locals into the State. It also demanded that “outsiders” should not be allowed to contest elections or vote in Manipur.
