Mizoram Education minister, Lalchhandama Ralte said the Gandhian view on education should be the central theme of National Education Policy, 2019.

Addressing Central Advisory Board of Education CABE meeting held in New Delhi on Saturday, the vision and priority of the father of the nation should be given special importance in the national education policy, according officials.

He said that importance should also be given to major languages of the Northeast region apart from 22 Indian major languages recognized in the VIII Schedules.

“Any attempt to dominate other minor languages by one major language should be strictly avoided,” he said. Ralte also told the meeting that equal parameters and norms are not applicable in all the schools across the country. He further said that many schools will have to function beyond the norms of the draft National Education Policy.

He then suggested various parameters and criteria mentioned in the National Education Policy should be reviewed to cover different class of societies across the country. The minister also sought the Centre’s help to re-employ 1,305 Hindi teachers in the state. He also said that Hindi learning or education could be revived in the state if the teachers are re-employed and paid.

Ralte then underlined the need for constructing quarters for teachers in elementary and secondary school in rural villages.

He then thanked the Centre for sanctioning fund to construct 282 teachers quarters under RMSA scheme. He also informed the meeting that at least 30 teacher quarters are constructed under the state’s flagship programme, Socio-Economic Development Policy (SEDP). He further told the meeting that many teachers were forced to hire substitute teachers due to absence of quarters, which in turn greatly affected education system in Mizoram.

Chaired by MHRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal, the meeting was attended by education ministers from 19 states. Ralte was accompanied by state School Education Joint Director.
