Gentle Reminder: Women’s participation in politics is a human right

The 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly Election 2018, yet again proved that Nagaland ranks last on the national list of women candidates contesting elections. It may be pointed out that since 1963 Nagaland has witnessed only 19 women candidates in the general assembly elections. The irony is that none has ever won till date. When will our so-called progressive community ever empower their women and girls across all its programmes and advocacy? On the other hand, the world has stepped up action on gender equality (SDG5) towards sustainable development by 2030, leaving no one behind. But, where do we stand?

Well, gender equality is everyone’s issue. Women in many parts of the world are crossing barriers, especially in politics, but sadly, their voices remain unheard and their contributions often sidelined. One obvious reason is that women are still seen as incapable of taking on responsibility in what is perceived as male-oriented spaces. Of course, women are working hard to assert themselves within the political space. However, continued cultural stigmas and beliefs have led to gender stereotyping leaving women victims to this phenomenon; while men assume the upper hand notwithstanding his academic and professional qualification. Hence, it is very important to conduct positive actions to challenge and rework the kind of leadership today. It is a sad fact that though women represent more than half of the global population, our voices, ideas, and expertise are still unnoticed. And, I would wish to state that the Naga society remains sexist since there is no equality, in actuality, and many women still have to function under men’s shadow. Naga women have to rise up, assume leadership roles, and have the courage to lead and pioneer.

Good luck to everyone who will bring the change we so desperately need. It is a great thing to embrace, which can be scary and exciting. To all the five women who boldly and fiercely stood for the 2018 election, unquestionably challenging the glass ceiling stereotype, the Naga women applaud your participation. To all men of our society, especially those who are sensible enough to comprehend and have supported this advocacy, Naga women seek your unwavering solidarity. Finally, to the rest (few men and women) who still assume that women’s job is still within the kitchen and house chambers, it's an assurance that the increase in the number of women in governing body undoubtedly won’t bring overnight changes in the status of women. Nor will it solve the entire issue faced by women and bring equality instantly. But, definitely mainstreaming women in politics and debates of decision-making will bring in major achievement in the empowerment of women.

Happy International Women’s Day 2018, #pressforprogress.
