Governor suggests corpus fund

Our Correspondent Kohima | August 9   Nagaland State Governor P.B. Acharya today suggested raising a corpus fund for Kohima College amounting to Rs. 1 crore. Addressing the golden jubilee celebration of Kohima College here, Acharya said he is ready to contribute initial seed money of Rs. 1 lakh and the rest be borne by alumni.   He said the corpus fund will immensely contribute to further growth of the College.   Kohima College was established on August 9, 1967. The College owes its existence to founding members, Dr. Neilhouzhu Kire, Dr. Satuo Sekhose, Vibeilie Solo and Vilalhoulie Belho from Kohima village. They shared a common concern—the need for an academic institution offering higher studies in the field of humanities in Kohima.   According to its souvenir, Kohima College began with an enrolment of 127 students. With over 2000 students today, Kohima College now has one of the largest student populations in the State.   The first students of Kohima College were mostly people already employed in government service, looking to upgrade their knowledge and qualifications, the souvenir stated adding that classes were slotted accordingly, in order to enable them to fulfill their professional responsibilities and pursue their further studies.   Kohima College holds the distinction of being the first private college offering higher education in humanities for the first time in Kohima.   Kohima College has seen considerable expansion through the past 50 years, said Principal Dr. Watijungshi Jamir. He added that the College has established two streams, arts & commerce, and in addition, introduced several certificate programmes and extra co-curricular programmes.   Kohima College today is a digital campus, has a digitized library and a tribal museum.   He said it is a desire of the College to find and establish a spacious permanent campus, strengthen the department of humanities, social sciences and commerce, introduce Post Graduate programmes, additional certificates and extra co-curricular programmes as an outcome of the golden jubilee celebration.
