High speculation for former GOC 3 Corps to be VP

Among others, former GOC 3 Corps, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah (PVSM, SM, VSM), who retired as the Deputy Chief of The Army Staff and the current Vice Chancellor (VC) of the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is highly speculated to be the next Vice President of India.

 

Speaking to The Morung Express over the phone, Lt. Gen (retd) Shah said, “I am aware about some speculations but I’m certainly not in the league to be considered as such (VP India).”

 

He has had several tenures in the North Eas,t particularly Nagaland, which even followed him after his retirement as the Deputy Chief of the Army when he was offered the coveted appointment of the Chairman, Cease Fire Monitoring Group in 2008.

 

However, Lt Gen (retd) Shah said he had to “regretfully not accept the offer” since he had spent many years in the army in non-family stations and had to settle with family and take care of few other aspects of properties.

 

The elder brother of the noted actor Naseer Uddin Shah (Padmashri, Padma Bhushan) also spoke about his “special love and affection” for Naga people which was developed when he served in the army and posted at Chakhabama, Nagaland from 1980-83. After that he became the GOC 3 Corps, where he revived his old friendships, especially with old friends like former General of FGN and DIG (retd), BSF, Late Zuheto K. Swu, KC, VSM. “My experience with Nagaland was probably the happiest period in my life and I really appreciate the liveliness of the Naga people, their love for music, beauty and nature,” he added.

 

Lt. Gen. (retd) Shah who was a Judge in the Armed Forces Tribunal, Principal Bench, New Delhi was also a beneficiary of Christian education and described the education imparted by the Christian missionaries as “noteworthy,” adding “I think everybody needs to emulate their dedication, love and affection that the Christian missionaries have for the students.”

 

Lt. Gen. (retd) Shah demits office of the VC, AMU on May 16, 2017, a little earlier before Vice President, Hamid Ansari finishes his tenure on August 18. He has expressed desire to do something in the field of education after his tenure as the VC of AMU. If what is speculated comes true, Lt. Gen. (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah would be the first army General to become the Vice President of India.

 

The widespread speculations of Lt. Gen (retd) Shah becoming the next VP also been reported in Hindi national newspapers such as ‘Amar Ujjala,’ ‘Hindustan,’ Urdu national daily, ‘Sahara’ and others.
