Himalayan Cleanup campaign across Nagaland today

Dimapur, May 25 (MExN): The Himalayan Cleanup campaign, an initiative focusing attention on the problem of waste in the mountains, will be observed across state today.

Initiated by Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) and ZeroWaste Himalayas across the 12 mountain states of India and coordinated by the Sustainable Development Forum Nagaland (SDFN), the campaign will be held in Dimapur, Kohima, Mon, Mokokchung, Phek and Zunheboto districts.

The Cleanup has attracted over 100s of signups from different states and Nagaland holds the record of the highest number of registrations, a press release from the organizer informed.

“More than 94 organizations in these 6 districts are involved in the Cleanup drive,” the release added, The SDFN also lauded the Dimapur Municipality and Swatchh Bharat Mission (Urban), Government of Nagaland for their initial support to sponsor participants to the pre-event meetings at Gangtok.

According to Amba Jamir, Executive Director, SDFN, the active responses “reflects the urgent need to not just spruce up our towns and villages in terms of cleanliness and hygiene” and also the concern of plastic pollution “caused by our ways of life and habits.”

“The best way to fight this menace of single-use plastic use is for us to all learn to ‘Refuse and Reduce’ before we even think of ‘Reuse and Recycle,’” he added.

In keeping with the global World Environment Day 2018 theme of Beat Plastic Pollution, the campaign will provide key insights into how much of the trash collected is plastic waste; recycled, and its usages through a process of waste audits and brand audits.
