A major tragedy was averted on Wednesday with the timely detection of two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted along NH-150 at Napet Palli under Lamlai police station of Imphal East district.

 

Traffic along the highway was blocked for some hours, from around 9.15 am, until experts from the Manipur police bomb detection and disposal squad defused the explosives around noon.

 

Police said that troops of 6 Assam Rifles on ROP duty detected the IEDs when they conducted sensitisation after the suspected objects were found on the road. They detected two objects wrapped with black polythene and they confirmed it as IEDs with the help of a sniffer dog. As soon as the sniffer dog detected the explosive materials, the troops of 15 Assam Rifles from nearby post and Lamlai police rushed to the spot and joined the 6 Assam Rifles. They immediately closed the road from moving all kinds of vehicles and pedestrians passing by the area as preventive measures. Then, they called in experts from the state police bomb detection and disposal squad from Imphal who defused the IEDs.

 

According to the experts, the IEDs found planted weighed three kg each. It was a medium intensity double remote control IEDs and if they get triggered, its impact will be spread 100 meter around the area.

 

Meanwhile, state police commandos conducted cordon and search operations at various places in the twin state capital districts. During the operations, the police picked up 14 individuals after they failed to produce documents to establish their identities.
