I'm teaching my children about addiction': Denise Richards

Their father has been one of the top headline-makers of the year, between his very public meltdown, the 'goddess' girlfriends, Tiger Blood and Torpedo of Truth tour. Denise Richards says that she shielded her daughters with the actor, Sam, seven, and Lola, six, from the media coverage of Charlie Sheen. But when whispers about their infamous father got through to the girls, Miss Richards reveals that she decided to teach them about addiction.
'I got a book to read to them,' the 40-year-old told Matt Lauer during an appearance on the Today show. 'I was just lying to them about so much, and covering up things and totally lying. It was just getting too confusing that I had to sit down with them. 'It's too early [for them to understand],' she added. 'I told them enough for them to make sense of things that were going on.' In New York to promote her new book The Real Girl Next Door, Denise refrained from dishing too much dirt on her ex-husband. Miss Richards was already in the middle of writing her book when Sheen hit the headlines earlier this year. 'I get into [Sheen's meltdown] briefly, because I knew I would be asked about it' she told Lauer. But chapters devoted to Sheen chronicle their marriage rather than his breakdown.

'People ask me why I married him,' Denise says. 'But the man I fell in love with is very compassionate, humble, has a wonderful heart. 'And the behaviour that a lot of us saw in the last six months is not the person that I met and fell in love with.' Asked if she cared for his well-being, Denise replied: 'Of course. He's the father of our children. But he's also a survivor. If anyone can pull themselves together, it's Charlie.'
Denise wore a brown top and taupe skirt for her appearance on the show, before changing into a blue dress for a visit to Sirius Radio to promote the book. Yesterday fans were given a first glimpse of the actress' new adopted daughter Eloise Joni as she made her way through the airport with her daughters. Discussing the six-week-old baby on the Today show, Denise said her older daughters 'are so excited and feel so blessed. They love feeding her and changing her. We’re very happy.'
