Imphal-bound truck set ablaze

Newmai News Network Imphal | November 21   An Imphal-bound goods-laden truck was torched near Tadubi, Senapati district in the wee hours of Monday, a report reaching here said.   The truck, which was carrying poultry feed, was set ablaze reportedly by economic blockade supporters at around 3:30 am near Tadubi village, which is located about 36 km east of Senapati district headquarters and about 91 km from the state capital Imphal.   Blockade supporters were also reported to have taken hold of four other trucks, laden with vegetables and edible oil, in the area.   The indefinite blockade imposed by the United Naga Council began on October 30 in opposition to the proposed plan of the Manipur state government to make Sadar Hills of Senapati and Jiribam sub-division of Imphal East into full-fledged revenue districts.   Transshipment of consumer goods along Imphal-Dimapur and Imphal-Jiribam highways has been seriously disrupted due to the stir. Essential commodities running short and price rise, the protracted blockade have attracted stinging condemnation from organisations based in the Imphal valley.   Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei on November 21 criticised the agitating Naga organization, saying people here are suffering unspeakable hardship as a result of the road blockade.   He said attention of the Centre’s interlocutor for Naga peace talks has been drawn by the state government over the blockade issue. The Manipur Deputy CM, while calling for an end to it, warned that the prolonged stir could derail the ongoing Naga peace process.   Gaikhangam also said the Centre should not sit back and remain idle at this crucial hour. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh is understood to have apprised Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh of the prevailing situation of Manipur in New Delhi on Saturday.   A six-member team of UNC recently held talks with officials of the Union Home Ministry at the national capital at the invitation of the latter over the blockade issue, but the talks failed to make headway prompting the Naga organization to intensify the stir since then.   Congress Councillors of Sadar Hills resigned en masse from the party on November 18 over the issue of Sadar Hills stating that they felt betrayed and humiliated by the state government’s last minute cancellation of its plan to inaugurate Sadar Hills as a full-fledged revenue district on November 1 last.
