Massive HIV/AIDS sensitization drive


Mokokchung, February 1 (MExN): The Network of Mokokchung District People Living with HIV and AIDS (NMP+) have been conducting sensitization programmes on HIV and AIDS in villages of Mokokchung district since November 28, 2010. These sensitization programmes are being conducted in collaboration with Bharti Infratel Ltd (NESA) as the sponsors. The sensitization programmes have been started with the mission to share information on HIV and AIDS and related issues in villages of Mokokchung district.
HIV and AIDS misconceptions dispelled: NMP+
NMP+ President Toshi Sangpi and General Secretary NMP T. Temsu Jamir today said in a press note that the sensitization programmes have so far been successful with tremendous response from all the villages visited so far. Longsa village served as the launch pad of the sensitization programmes on November 28, 2010. This was followed by Chuchuyimpang village on January 16, 2011, Chuchuyimlang Village on January 23, 2011 and Longpa Village on January 30, 2011. Altogether, around 600 people have been imparted information on HIV and AIDS related issues like HIV and AIDS scenario of Mokokchung, facts about HIV, AIDS and ART, Chronic care, and Impact of Stigma and Discrimination.
These programmes have served as a fact-finding exercise regarding awareness about HIV and AIDS of the general public. The question hour sessions of the sensitization programmes have revealed the unawareness about HIV and AIDS of most of the participants. “The programmes prove very helpful for villagers as their doubts, myths and misconceptions about HIV and AIDS are dispelled by the speakers at the sensitization programmes. It is our conviction that stigma and discrimination will be eventually removed and the pandemic contained as their misconceptions are dispelled during the question hour sessions,” the note stated.
Meanwhile, the NMP+ urges all the people of Mokokchung district for active participation in the sensitization programmes when it is being conducted in their respective places. “Knowledge and awareness of HIV and AIDS is the main weapon in the fight against the pandemic. And knowledge of HIV and AIDS through the sensitization programmes will have enabled and made a member of the general populace a vital component against the pandemic,” the NMP+ press note added.
NMP+ also expressed hope that the conduct of sensitization programmes on HIV and AIDS in other villages of Mokokchung district be as responsive and cooperative as the previous ones. The participation and thereby the awareness of every individual will have created the power to restrict the transmission of further infections.
