Infrastructural deficiency in Kiphire jail

Kiphire, December 15 (MExN): Kiphire District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) visited the District Jail, Kiphire on December 15. During the visit, the ‘Under Trail Review Committee’ also conducted its quarterly review in the Legal Aid Clinic.  

According to a press release, the jail authorities cited that the current jail premises was lacking infrastructure in accommodating an exclusive women’s prison block. There is also no proper kitchen and the prison compound has only one single ‘entry and exit gate’ which is a security concern, it was relayed.  

The Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary Kiphire, DLSA, Mezivolu T Therieh, NJS opened the meeting by welcoming the officials and thanked them for their participation.  

She mentioned that as far as the current Under Trial Prisoners (UTPs) are concerned, none of them are under illegal detention and applauded the jail authorities, the panel lawyers and PLVs for their prompt efforts in referring the matters to the Court. Stating that the Sessions’ cases are getting delayed due to absence of permanent Sessions Judge, she stressed the need for the same. The Committee observed that the overall performance of the prison was satisfactory, except for the infrastructural deficiency which needs to be urgently addressed.  

The Deputy Commissioner of Kiphire, MA Shihab, IAS, while inspecting the jail premises interacted with both the under trail inmates and also the convicts. He exhorted them there is always room for reformation and hoped they will eventually be able to reintegrate into society as responsible citizens once they have served their term. He also applauded the efforts of the jail authorities, while observing that the jail was well maintained.
