K. Therie’s political statement self contradictory: NPF

The statements of K. Therie that appeared in sections of the local press on 6th May, 2011 are the best example of self contradiction in the political arena. The political journey of K. Therie is well known to the people and it speaks volumes of the type of person and leader that he is. In 2002 as senior minister in the SC Jamir’s Congress government cabinet, he was dismissed from the government to which, Therie gave a 9 to 10 pages write up explaining his position to the Disciplinary Action Committee but was expelled from the Congress on multiple grounds. He immediately went on an anti-Congress and anti-Jamir tirade using the most abusive and unparliamentarily language. He claimed that one of the primary reasons of his anti-Jamir stand was due to the publication of the booklet “Bedrock of Naga Society” authored by SC Jamir and another was Madam Sonia Gandhi’s Foreign national issue.
In the first DAN Government, he was made Finance Minister but very soon his contradictory and indigestible style of functioning coupled with widespread mismanagement of funds resulted in him being dropped from the ministry due to the popular demand of all sections of the ruling coalition to which, Therie submitted a 4 to 5 page write up pleading his position, but was expelled from the party. As Finance Minister, he even went to the extent of calling SC Jamir “shameless” and continued his attack on SC Jamir and the Congress. He termed the Congress stand on the Naga political issue “unacceptable and anti-Naga” and staunchly defended the stand of the NPF led DAN Government. He was the one who called the DAN Government “a people’s government” time and again. He continually stated that until and unless SC Jamir and the Congress publicly apologies and reject the “Bedrock of Naga Society”, the Naga people would never forgive SC Jamir and the Congress. He accused SC Jamir of lacking in vision and that the Jamir era in Naga politics was over.
Today, K. Therie has changed his political stand, his political principle and his political colour. He has become the chief agent for SC Jamir in the ongoing Aonglenden assembly bye elections and is staunchly defending the author of the “Bedrock of Naga Society” and its author. He is defending the political stand of SC Jamir by making the same accusations against the NPF which he had made about SC Jamir. Such contradictory behavior is ridiculous and explains the political maturity and capability of the person concerned. These facts explain what sort of a person Therie is, as he and his new found mentor are realizing with every passing hour of this elections, that the people are not fools and cannot be taken for granted anymore. He lost in the assembly elections of 2008, then lost the Rajya Sabha and the bye elections of Chizami in 2009. He obviously does not know where he stands. But the people know. The people of Aonglenden will not be swayed one bit by the contradictory utterances of a man who has been rejected by the people even in his own district and his own constituency.
As Finance Minister in the NPF led DAN government, Mr K. Therie’s views on the state of affairs of Nagaland is and utterly negative and only exposes the deeply ingrained old habits and practices of  a politician of his like who encouraged and practiced appeasement and bribing for votes to win elections, disseminating the evil practice amongst the Nagas. Therie is surely aware that, the Government of India will never sanction even a rupee to any state until and unless it is convinced of the state’s performance and that the proposal is required for genuine investment. Thereafter, a state Government is accountable for all receipts by way of utilization and implementation under strict vigil of the Central Government. Nagaland is amongst the best performing states in many of the flagship programmes and this is fully justified by the fact that Nagaland is a recipient of various prestigious national awards for exemplary implementation of welfare programmes.
The candid declaration of the NPF led DAN Government leadership that – Nagaland is a consuming state; not a producing state and in this regard, the effort of the Government of Nagaland undertaking the Herculean task to promote the economy (of the people) to that of a “self sufficient state” is commendable. The NE Agri Expos organized by Nagaland Government under the theme “Prosperity through Agriculture” held at Dimapur speaks volumes of the Government’s success towards economic stability of the state. Improvised method of cultivation, innovative step and introduction of soil friendly food crops, cash crops and innovative system of cultivation etc. for better harvests, with latest technology and machineries have percolated to the grass root level cultivators. Besides, improvement of roads, construction of modernized Government offices, official residential buildings, rest houses and village level connectivity and agri link roads have mushroomed in all districts of the state during the last 8 years of DAN Government in office.
The decision on the length of Government employees was taken after thorough study, deliberations with mass based civil societies and the employees as well, with unsullied concern for the wellbeing and security of the people in general and the youths in particular, and as such, - “dictatorial behavior of the DAN” upon Government employees does not arise at all. Keeping in mind that youths are the future of a world like ours, the NPF led DAN Government has done the most for their uplift and secure future, and a glaring result of the DAN Government’s effort is that, maximum privileges; be it in the field of employment, within Nagaland, India and abroad, business and entrepreneurship, sports, music and higher study opportunities within the Country and abroad have been availed by the youths during the 8 years DAN coalition in office as never before.
Release of payment of what ever is due to the retired personals is going on and the respective departments are in the process of forwarding their pension and GPF for clearance, as has been time and again clarified by the office of the AG Nagaland.
The vision and policies of the NPF led DAN Government is crystal clear in the eye of the people and as facilitator, without bias or favoritism, it (Government) is striving for an honorable solution of the Indo-Naga political problem acceptable to all. However, contrary to the collective efforts and positive progress on the Indo-Naga political problem, with assurance of the UPA leadership for an early solution; voicing his opinion and comments on the history of the more than six decade old Naga problem, Mr Therie is only projecting himself as a political rascal, strongly opposed to the people’s relentless efforts for Naga reconciliation and the much awaited desire of the Naga people for an early and honorable solution of the Indo-Naga political issue acceptable to all.
Petrifying memories of lawlessness, merciless killings and gun battles that rocked Nagaland are afresh in the minds of the people, until peace gradually staggered in, with firm and careful handling of law and order situation as the DAN Government, with people’s mandate, took over in 2003. The NPCC should not forget that Cease Fire was promulgated in 1997, but the Congress Government, with absolute majority (without any opposition member) in State Assembly failed to address the situation. If Nagaland is today, one among the most peaceful states of India, credit is every one’s, including the Union and state Governments, religious organizations, Underground Factions, NGOs and mass based civil society organizations or individuals. The Media Cell, NPCC can not deny the fact that the NPF led DAN Government, as facilitator of the ongoing Indo-Naga Peace Process is an architect of the prevalent peaceful atmosphere.
With sincere efforts to hammer out a consensus on the 33% reservation for women to ensure a realistic practice, rounds of consultative meetings involving Political parties, NGOs and mass based civil societies have been conducted, but no tangible outcome on the issue could emerge, and hence, the NPF President Dr Shürhozelie, Minister for Urban Development under taking the Herculean task of touring the state, meeting and interacting with the denizens of the different Tribes is to elicit the opinion of the people on the 33% reservation Bill is of paramount importance as it is for posterity and will go a long way once enacted.
