KAAC restriction on 10-wheelers affects sand price

Dimapur Sand traders appeals govt authorities to intervene

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 19 (MExN): Sand traders and transporters in Dimapur made an appeal today urging the Dimapur district administration to intervene with regard to a reported ban on 10-wheeler trucks by the Karbi Anglong Autonmous Council (KAAC).

According to a press release issued by the Sand Stockists and Suppliers Union Chümoukedima (SSSUC) and Assam Sand Suppliers Truck Owners Association Dimapur (ASSTOAD), the Department of Environment and Forest, KAAC through a notification on November 18, 2019 restricted the plying of 10-wheeler trucks within the latter’s jurisdiction.

Subsequent to the order, “mahaldars” at Karbi-Anglong refused to entertain 10-wheeler trucks. The restriction reduced the import volume of sand to Dimapur, as a result of which the price of sand has gone up, it added.

On account of the prevailing issue, the release said that the two associations met and discussed on January 17 wherein it resolved to request the Dimapur district administration to take up the matter with the KAAC for reconsidering the November 18 notification.

The two Associations “have been carrying on the business abiding the laws of the land and paying all the relevant taxes while plying on National Highway as well as other royalties and taxes,” it added.
