'KHNAM merger proposal not breaching Indian Constitution'

Shillong |December 9: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM)'s proposed merger with the United Democratic Party (UDP) is not in contravention with the clauses of the 10th Scheduled of the Indian Constitution, According to the Speaker of the Meghalaya legislative assembly, Charles Pyngrope.
Amidst the claims and counter claims by the rival factions on the dissolution of the KHNAM and its pending merger with the UDP, the Speaker told newsmen in Shillong on Friday that there is no hurdles to KHNAM pending merger with the UDP.
“The 10th Scheduled of the Constitution clearly states  that two third of the party members in the state legislature and the Parliament should agree merger  and Paul Lyngdoh as the sole MLA of that party in the house automatically fulfills the criteria”, stated the Speaker
Interpreting the law Pyngrope categorically maintains that there is no concrete ground to stop the lone KHNAM legislator to merge with the UDP. The president of the dissolved KHNAM Paul Lyngdoh along with other functionaries submitted the papers to the Speaker to formally announce the merger. The KHNAM will officially merge with the UDP on December 12.
Again, amidst the diatribes by his detractors and general secretary of KHNAM against Paul Lyngdoh, the KHNAM legislator  reiterated his stand that the KHNAM has been dissolved without any breach of the party constitution or the norms laid by the Election Commission of India. “I wanted the likes of Pyndapbor Saiborne and Adilberth Nonrum to consider their stand and move with the voice of the majority”, stated Paul Lyngdoh today. Paul Lyngdoh's statement came a day after Saiborne claimed that the KHNAM can be revived as per the norms of the Election Commission of India.
